Embroidery Workshops

Come and learn the basics of appliqué and machine embroidery in a 3 hour workshop at my home in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Homemade cakes and plenty of cups of tea included as well as lots of tips on embroidery.

All materials included (plain natural coloured linen fabric to embroider onto and fabric remnants for appliqué) .

You will need to come prepared with a simple design (but I have some flower sketches you can trace otherwise so don’t worry if you can’t draw!) We will transfer the design onto a linen fabric background and add machine embroidered appliqué. You are welcome to bring scraps of fabric you would like to use for the appliqué but I have a stash you can raid otherwise! After the workshop you can go away and make this into either:

  • A tea towel
  • A cushion front
  • A small drum lampshade

NB We wouldn’t make these up in the workshop – but feel free to book a lampshade workshop too.

Workshop Duration: 3 hours

Cost: £75

Small Group Workshops / Parties

Alternatively, if you would like to book a workshop for a small group, either at my house or yours, or even a community space, please contact me for booking details. Prices on request depending on numbers.

Testimonials from recent lampshade workshop students:

“Thank you so much for yesterday’s course. We all had a great morning, and were thrilled-and surprised – with our gorgeous lampshades. We are so grateful for expert tuition and patience! The course was perfect- challenging enough for us to be proud of our new found skills, but not too tricky as to put us off ‘flying solo’ at home.”

Thank you so much for your lovely email.  I am so very pleased that your enterprise is such a success.  Many years ago now, my friend and I came to one of your workshops and had a delightful and rewarding afternoon making lampshades. I am delighted that you have been able to expand your business. Your pictures show your work is so beautiful and creative. I know you bring much joy and satisfaction to your students. I wish you much success and happiness in the New Year and for many years to come.

“My sister and I attended Julie’s lampshade workshop and had a wonderful time. It was informative but relaxed and I can’t wait to do another one!

“Thanks so much Julie. I really enjoyed this morning and your friendly tuition learning a new skill. Feeling very inspired and they look great in situ. My husband is very impressed. Lovely meeting you and also seeing your beautifully styled house.”

“We were very pleased with our lampshade making course and both made a beautiful lampshade.
Julie was very informative and helpful just a lovely person.”

“Many thanks for giving us a thoroughly enjoyable time today: making lampshades, eating your scrumptious cake and generally having fun! it was a great pleasure to meet you and spend time in your lovely home.
I am absolutely thrilled to bits with my new lampshade and now feel confident to embark on making more – you gave an excellent course.”

“My only feed back is that you have a lovely teaching style, relaxed , friendly and not rushed.  For me, the perfect thing to do on my day off and the finale that gorgeous cake.  Just perfect!!!!”

“I travelled a long way for my one on one lesson with Julie, I live abroad, so a lot was riding on it as I had made a big investment to get there and it was the first step in a new business venture. I have been to a lot of art and craft tutorials and some tutors aren’t very good at imparting knowledge. Julie was great. The whole lesson felt uncluttered, from workspace to answers to all my questions. I learned about fabrics, suppliers, shapes and possibilities and before I knew it, I had made a lovely fabric covered 30cm drum shade. Julie fed me delicious home made cake, drove me to the station afterwards and then took time to answer dozens of questions on email. I felt really supported in the learning, before and after. Julie’s lesson is more affordable than many, but I opted for her as she came recommended by a lampshade supply company… I’m very happy to endorse that recommendation. Thank you Julie.”

“I had a really fun morning making a lampshade as a birthday treat with my mum and mother-in-law with Julie. We weren’t rushed and she explained the whole process really well. I’m not normally very good at anything creative, but thanks to Julie I’m really pleased with the lampshade I made and feel confident I could do another one. The cake she had made for us also amazing!”
